From Istanbul Airport (IST) to the city
M11 metro
M11 links the airport with the metro network and avoids road traffic. For Taksim, connect toward the M2 line; for the Old City, expect at least one additional metro, tram or walking connection depending on the route planner.
The metro is economical and reliable, but less pleasant with large luggage, young children or a hotel far from a station. Istanbulkart is used for the municipal metro portion.
HAVAIST airport coach
HAVAIST runs dedicated luggage-friendly coaches from the airport to major city areas. It has its own fare and payment system, so do not assume Istanbulkart covers the coach.
A direct Sultanahmet/historic-center route has appeared on HAVAIST's network at points in 2026, but it has also been suspended for stretches of the year, and sources disagree on whether it is currently running. Do not plan around a direct HAVAIST-to-Sultanahmet bus without checking on the day. If no direct line is listed, the reliable fallback is a HAVAIST coach to Aksaray followed by a short T1 tram ride to Sultanahmet. Search your destination on the official HAVAIST website rather than relying on an old route number.
At IST, follow signs to the airport coach departure level. Allow extra time during weekday rush hours and Friday evenings.
Taxi or private transfer
Use the official airport taxi rank, where attendants direct passengers to licensed vehicles. The meter should be used; tolls may be added to the fare. A pre-booked private transfer can make sense for a family, a late arrival or several people sharing the cost, but verify the meeting point and final price in writing.
From Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) to the city
M4 metro
M4 runs directly from the airport across the Asian side. For Kadıköy, continue toward the western end of the line. For the European side, connect to Marmaray at Ayrılık Çeşmesi or continue toward a ferry connection, depending on your destination and operating hours.
For Sultanahmet, M4 plus Marmaray to Sirkeci is often the most traffic-proof route, followed by a walk or short T1 tram ride.
HAVABUS
Official HAVABUS coaches connect SAW with Kadıköy and Taksim. They are useful when your hotel is near one of those hubs or when you prefer fewer stairs with luggage. The airport’s official page identifies the white coaches outside the arrivals level.
HAVABUS has separate tickets and fares. Check the current official timetable because road congestion can greatly extend the journey.
Taxi or private transfer
A taxi from SAW to the European Old City can be a long and expensive ride, especially in peak traffic. It becomes more reasonable when several travelers share the fare or arrive after the most convenient rail connections.

Sultanahmet or Sirkeci
From IST, a direct HAVAIST coach to Sultanahmet is the simplest option when it is running, but check current availability first; the reliable fallback is HAVAIST or M11 to Aksaray, then a short T1 tram ride, which also avoids road traffic. From SAW, M4 plus Marmaray to Sirkeci is usually the strongest public-transport route.
Taksim
Both airports have direct coach options to Taksim. From IST, M11 plus M2 can be faster during heavy road traffic.
Karaköy or Galata
From IST, use HAVAIST or M11/M2 and complete the final segment by metro, funicular or taxi. From SAW, M4 plus Marmaray or a Kadıköy ferry can work well, but steep streets make the final hotel location important.
Kadıköy
SAW is much more convenient: use M4 or HAVABUS. From IST, expect a cross-city journey; an airport coach or metro combination plus ferry/Marmaray may be more sensible than a taxi in traffic.
Istanbul airport taxi rules
Licensed taxis use a meter. To reduce problems:
- use the official airport taxi rank or a well-established ride-hailing app;
- confirm that the meter starts at the beginning of the ride;
- ask whether bridge, tunnel or motorway tolls will be added;
- keep the hotel name and full address available offline;
- follow the route on your phone;
- request a receipt.
Taxi colors indicate categories with different tariffs. The standard yellow taxi is normally the cheapest category. A fixed-price transfer is not automatically a scam, but the total must be agreed clearly before the ride.
