Travel eSIM or local SIM?
Travel eSIM
A travel eSIM is usually data-only and connects through a roaming partner. It lets you keep your physical home SIM in the phone for messages or two-factor authentication, provided roaming settings are controlled carefully.
Advantages:
- no airport queue or passport registration;
- installation before travel;
- mobile data as soon as you land;

Since July 2025, Türkiye’s telecom regulator has restricted access to the websites and apps of several international eSIM sellers. Existing travel eSIMs can still work, but purchase, install and save the activation details before departure. Do not plan to troubleshoot or buy extra data only after you arrive.
Local physical SIM
A Turkish prepaid SIM provides a local number and may be more suitable for a longer stay, local calls or services that expect a Turkish number. You need your passport, and the shop registers the line in your name.
Buy from an official Turkcell, Vodafone or Türk Telekom store. Ask for the complete tourist-package price, including the SIM, activation and taxes, before staff begin registration. Keep the paperwork and test data before leaving the shop.
Türkiye’s 120-day IMEI rule
A foreign phone used on Turkish mobile networks without local device registration can eventually be blocked by IMEI. The commonly stated allowance is up to 120 days, after which long-term users may need to register the handset and pay a substantial government fee.
The important practical points are:
- the restriction concerns the phone’s IMEI, not merely one SIM card;
- changing a local SIM does not necessarily reset the device allowance;
- a normal one- or two-week holiday is far below the limit;
- the rule mainly affects residents, long stays and frequent extended use;
- official registration rules and fees can change.
A roaming travel eSIM is a practical short-trip option, but do not treat it as a guaranteed permanent workaround for living in Türkiye. Long-stay visitors should check their device status and current registration rules through official Turkish channels.
Where to buy a SIM card in Istanbul
Airport operator shops stay open long hours and solve the problem immediately, but convenience can come with a significant markup. City-center stores usually provide better choice and a clearer chance to compare operators.
Good places to look include official stores around Taksim, Şişli, Kadıköy, Beşiktaş and major shopping centers. Avoid unbranded resellers that cannot clearly explain the total fee or line ownership.
If you need maps immediately after landing, either install a travel eSIM before departure, use airport Wi-Fi temporarily or accept the airport premium for a local SIM.
How much data do you need?
For one week in Istanbul:
- maps, messaging and light browsing: a few gigabytes may be enough;
- frequent social media and photo uploads: choose a mid-sized package;
- video streaming, hotspot use or remote work: choose a larger plan and check whether tethering is allowed.
