Istanbulkart and Public Transport: How to Get Around Istanbul

What is Istanbulkart?

Istanbulkart is the city’s stored-value contactless transport card. Tap it on the reader at a gate or validator, wait for the confirmation and proceed. The system deducts the applicable fare from the card balance.

Short-term visitors normally need the anonymous card, not a personalized resident, student or subscription card. Be careful not to confuse it with more expensive tourist products or passes sold with bundled attractions. Those can be useful for a specific itinerary, but they are not required for ordinary public transport.

Where to buy Istanbulkart

Look for yellow or blue Biletmatik ticket machines at:

• metro and tram stations;
• Marmaray and Metrobus stations;
• major ferry piers;
• airport metro stations;
• large transport interchanges.

Authorized kiosks and shops displaying the Istanbulkart logo also sell cards. A machine may sell the card separately from travel credit, so check the screen carefully: after purchasing the card, you normally need to load additional lira before your first ride.

Machines usually offer an English-language menu. Payment options vary by machine; carrying Turkish lira cash is useful if a foreign card is declined.

How to top up Istanbulkart

At a Biletmatik:

1. Place the card on the marked reader.
2. Select English if needed.
3. Choose the top-up option.
4. Insert cash or follow the available card-payment instructions.
5. Leave the card on the reader until the new balance appears.

Load a moderate amount rather than a large trip budget. An anonymous card is similar to cash: if you lose it, recovering the remaining balance may not be possible.

Can several people use one Istanbulkart?

An anonymous Istanbulkart can pay for several people on ordinary rides: tap once per traveler. This is convenient for couples or families making simple tram, metro, bus or ferry journeys.

There are two reasons individual cards may still be better:

• transfer discounts may apply only to the first passenger;
• on distance-based systems such as Marmaray or Metrobus, the exit refund is normally calculated correctly only for the card’s primary journey.

For a couple taking only a few central rides, sharing is usually fine. For frequent travel, long Marmaray journeys or routes with fare refunds, one card per person is cleaner and may be cheaper.

How much does public transport cost?

Istanbul adjusts fares often, sometimes more than once a year. The card purchase price is separate from the balance loaded onto it, and distance-based services can charge differently from a standard city ride.

The useful rule is that an Istanbulkart is generally better value than buying single-use tickets repeatedly. Check the fare displayed at the gate and the current official tariff rather than relying on an old blog post. Keep enough balance for your next connection, especially before boarding a ferry or entering Marmaray.

Can you use a contactless bank card instead?

Contactless bank-card acceptance exists in parts of the network, but the fare can be higher and availability is not uniform enough to make it the best primary plan. Foreign cards can also be declined by the machine or issuer.

For reliable city travel, use an Istanbulkart and treat a contactless bank card as a backup. Cards issued in Russia generally do not work in Türkiye.

Public transport tourists actually use

T1 tram

The T1 is the key Old City line. It connects Sultanahmet, the Grand Bazaar area, Eminönü, Karaköy and Kabataş. In heavy traffic it is often faster than a taxi, although it becomes extremely crowded at peak times.

Metro

The metro is the fastest way to cover longer distances without road traffic. M2 is useful for Taksim, Şişhane and connections north; M4 serves the Asian side and Sabiha Gökçen Airport; M11 connects Istanbul Airport with the metro network.

Ferries

Municipal ferries connect the European and Asian shores and are among the city’s best-value experiences. Routes such as Eminönü–Üsküdar, Karaköy–Kadıköy and Beşiktaş–Kadıköy provide excellent views without a sightseeing-cruise price. See our Bosphorus ferry and cruise guide.

Funiculars

The F1 links Kabataş with Taksim. The historic Tünel funicular saves a steep climb between Karaköy and the lower end of İstiklal Avenue.

Marmaray and Metrobus

Marmaray crosses beneath the Bosphorus and is useful for Sirkeci, Üsküdar and longer east–west journeys. Metrobus is fast but crowded and less important for a typical Old City itinerary. Both use distance-sensitive fare rules, which is one reason separate Istanbulkarts can help.

Airport transport is a special case

Practical tips

• Buy the card at your first metro, tram or ferry station.
• Keep enough balance for an unexpected transfer.
• Let passengers leave before boarding.
• Avoid the T1 with large luggage during rush hour if possible.
• Use the official transit apps or Google Maps for routing, but check ferry notices separately in bad weather.
• Keep some lira for machines that do not accept your card.

The historic Sultanahmet core is compact. Use transport to reach the area, then walk between Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Basilica Cistern and Topkapi Palace.
