Routes such as Eminönü–Üsküdar, Karaköy–Kadıköy or Beşiktaş–Kadıköy are public transport. Pay with Istanbulkart, sit with local commuters and enjoy views of the skyline during a 15–30 minute crossing.

This is the best budget choice, but it is not a continuous tour up the Bosphorus. There is no narration, and the boat’s purpose is to move passengers between piers.

Şehir Hatları Bosphorus tour

The municipal ferry operator runs dedicated sightseeing routes. They use large boats with indoor seating and open decks. Tickets and fares are separate from a normal Istanbulkart city crossing.

As of August 2026, the official network lists Long, Short and seasonal sunset tours. Check the current Şehir Hatları timetable before going to the pier.

Private Bosphorus cruise

Private operators run frequent departures from Eminönü, Kabataş and Beşiktaş. A higher fare may buy a more convenient departure, guaranteed seating, commentary, snacks, dinner or hotel pickup. Quality varies widely, so check the exact boat, route, duration and inclusions rather than buying from the first street seller.

Which Bosphorus route should you choose?

Long Bosphorus Tour

The classic municipal day trip runs from Eminönü to Anadolu Kavağı, near the Black Sea end of the strait, with stops along the way and a long break ashore. As of 10 August 2026, the published departure was 10:35 am, arriving at Anadolu Kavağı at 12:25 pm; the return left at 3:00 pm and reached Eminönü at 4:40 pm.

This is the best choice if the boat trip is a major part of your day. At Anadolu Kavağı, have lunch or walk uphill toward Yoros Castle viewpoints. Confirm that the return sailing operates on your chosen date before leaving the boat.

Short Bosphorus Tour

The official short route runs from Eminönü via Üsküdar to Ortaköy and back without a long shore break. It is easier to fit into a sightseeing day, but departures are limited and special-holiday sailings may appear separately on the timetable.

Ordinary cross-Bosphorus ferry

If you have less than an hour, ride from Eminönü to Üsküdar or from Karaköy to Kadıköy. Combine it with a meal or neighborhood walk on the Asian side, then return after dark for a lit-up skyline.

Sunset or dinner cruise

A sunset cruise prioritizes timing and atmosphere. A dinner cruise adds entertainment and a meal, but the food and commentary can be secondary to the view. Read recent reviews carefully and verify whether drinks, transfers and seating are included.

Bosphorus tour prices in 2026

Şehir Hatları publishes separate local and foreign-passenger fares for dedicated Bosphorus tours. On 10 August 2026, the official list showed ₺640 return for the Long Bosphorus Tour and ₺340 for the Short Bosphorus Tour for foreign passengers. Children’s rules and seasonal sunset-tour fares differ.

These figures can change. Treat them as a dated reference and check the official fare page before travel. Ordinary commuter ferries use the Istanbulkart fare system and are much cheaper.

Where do Bosphorus cruises leave from?

Eminönü is the main departure area for municipal Bosphorus tours and many private boats. Take the T1 tram to Eminönü and walk toward the ferry piers beside Galata Bridge.

Do not assume every ticket seller represents Şehir Hatları. Municipal and private operators use neighboring piers. Read the large destination board over the entrance and confirm:

• operator name;
• departure and return pier;
• total duration;
• whether the boat stops or turns around;
• what is included in the price.

Other private cruises leave from Kabataş and Beşiktaş. Check the exact pier on your booking, not just the neighborhood name.

What can you see from the Bosphorus?

Depending on the route, the principal sights include:

• the 15 July Martyrs Bridge, often called the first Bosphorus Bridge;

The open deck offers the best views but can be windy even in summer. Bring a light layer and sun protection.

Best time for a Bosphorus boat trip

Late afternoon gives softer light, while sunset provides the most dramatic skyline. Morning is better for the Long Tour and often calmer in hot weather.

Strong wind, fog and storms can delay or cancel sailings. Check operator announcements before traveling to the pier. In cooler months, choose a boat with a comfortable indoor cabin even if you plan to photograph from outside.

• Buying a private ticket while believing it is the municipal ferry.
• Choosing a “two-hour tour” without checking whether that includes boarding and waiting time.
• Expecting a guide on a public commuter ferry.
